Tromp Shot 6: Harpers Ferry

Highly regretting an extended absence, I hope to ease the boots back on with this Tromp Shot.

October maple alights the scene over Harpers Ferry from Bolivar Heights.

  1. Great Photo Dylan. Have you ever done the Maryland Heights trail? I am planning to do it in March. Is there a Bolivar Heights trail as well? Also any fortificaions to see on Bolivar?
    See you on the trail-

  2. Robert,

Thanks! I have not done the Maryland Heights trail, but that is definitely on my to-do list for the upcoming season. There is a Bolivar Heights trail. One small loop trail circles the peak of the heights, with stops at lunette remnants (if I remember correctly) and a viewshed of Schoolhouse Ridge (Jackson's approach). Another trail branches off and takes you into the valley between the two. I'd highly recommend it!

By the way, I just peaked at your blog and think I'll really enjoy diving into it in the very near future. I love photographing Gettysburg, and Monocacy is a favorite of mine. Any tips on capturing the depth of earthworks/breastworks, etc? I find this to be pretty tough.

Hope to see you on the field!

  5. Dylan,

Any plans to hike at Gettysburg this Spring/Summer? I have been wanting to get out there and just hike around on my own, get some cool photos, see the battlefield from my feet. It is only 3 hours away, but have only been there twice.

  6. Mark,

I will most definitely make it out to Gettysburg at least a few times this season. I love to go tromp that ground. Usually I'll put together a vague plan around some sort of theme, and then I'll take the proper guides, memoirs, etc., and set out for an adventure. For example, I've spent a day tracking and photographing witness trees; Longstreet's march to the right is off the beaten path; and spending a whole day at Culp's Hill can really provide perspective. Most importantly, I think the ground still echoes the human tragedy of that summer and I think it demands that we feel, and reflect upon, that. This is when 'doing it alone' can be especially poignant.

Hope you can make it out!
